How are lottery odds calculated?
The number of possible tickets is the combination C(n, k) = n! / (k!(n−k)!). For a 6/49 draw that is 13,983,816, so one ticket has a 1 in 13,983,816 chance.
What is the expected value of a ticket?
Jackpot divided by the number of combinations, minus the ticket price. It is almost always negative, and real payouts are lower still because of taxes and shared jackpots.
